The three-coin method

Each coin face has equal probability. Sums 6, 7, 8, 9 have probabilities 1/8, 3/8, 3/8, 1/8. Six is changing yin; seven stable yang; eight stable yin; nine changing yang. Lines build bottom to top and use the King Wen sequence. These are original reflections on the two trigrams, not translations of the traditional judgments or line texts.

The field notes

How to Cast an I Ching Hexagram

Each cast assigns three coins values of two or three and adds them. Repeat six times, with the first line at the bottom. Totals seven and nine are solid yang lines; six and eight are broken yin lines. Six and nine are changing lines.

The six lines identify a primary hexagram. Changing lines switch polarity to produce the relating figure; unchanged lines keep their form. If no line changes, both figures are the same.

I Ching Changing-Line Example

Consider totals 7, 8, 9, 8, 7, 6 in bottom-to-top order. Lines three and six change. The solid third line becomes broken, while the broken sixth line becomes solid. Keep the line order intact when comparing the two figures.

Interpreting I Ching Changing Lines

Compare the themes you associate with the primary and relating figures. Ask what in your situation is stable and what may need a different response. The relating figure is not a guaranteed future event, and an original reflection prompt is not a traditional changing-line quotation.

I Ching Texts and Interpretation Limits

The experience provides the 64 King Wen figures, changing-line positions and original trigram-based reflection prompts. It does not reproduce a full translation of the judgments and line texts. If you consult a translation alongside it, use the displayed figure number and changing lines to find the corresponding passage.

The casts and notes remain in page memory. Copy the record you want to keep before leaving so a later reflection does not depend on recreating the cast.
